Team USA needed ace Ilia Malinin to do the unthinkable on Sunday, and he did just that, winning the team event in breathtaking fashion.

MILAN (AP) — It seemed only fitting that Ilia Malinin was the first one to get his Olympic gold medal after the U.S. successfully defended its team title by holding off the Japanese on Sunday night in the three-day competition at the Milan Cortina Games.

Norway’s Sander Eitrem took home gold in the men’s 5,000-meter speedskating competition, setting an Olympic record at 6:03.95. Czechia won gold in women’s parallel giant slalom, while Austria took gold in the men’s event.

US figure skating star Ilia Malinin was upstaged on his Olympic debut on Saturday as Japan's Yuma Kagiyama led the men's short program in the team event.
